Use PartLogic in ChatGPT

Find stock records and check part references by asking ChatGPT. The PartLogic MCP connection gives ChatGPT a tool for retrieving the stock rows your connection is authorised to access.

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It lets ChatGPT request information from PartLogic and use the returned records in its answer.

What you can do

The current integration supports read-only stock lookup through list_stock. You can ask ChatGPT to:

  • Show a small sample of accessible stock records.
  • Search records using a part reference, SKU, barcode or short description.
  • Compare returned identifiers and show possible variants.
  • Present the returned fields in a table and identify missing information.
  • Retrieve additional pages of stock rows.

The MCP does not currently provide tools to change stock, validate barcodes, submit orders or generate replenishment recommendations. PartLogic's wider platform features are separate from the tools available through this connection.

Before you connect

You need access to PartLogic stock data and an MCP connection provisioned for your organisation. Ask your PartLogic administrator for the approved endpoint and connection instructions. Access to devices follows the portal API key associated with the connection.

You also need a ChatGPT account and workspace that allow custom MCP connections. Developer mode availability depends on your account and workspace policy.

Keep connection credentials in the approved connection configuration. Do not paste MCP tokens or portal API keys into a conversation.

Generate your portal API key

  1. Sign in to the PartLogic portal. New users can follow the signup guide.
  2. Open Integrations and select New API Key.

  1. Enter a Key name, for example ChatGPT stock lookup.
  2. Tick the devices ChatGPT should be able to query. Use the filter to find them by name or site.
  3. Set Expires On if you want time-limited access, then select Generate.

  1. Copy the key into a secure store before leaving: the complete value is displayed only once. Select Return when finished.

The Integrations screen and new-key form were also checked in the signed-in portal on 30 September 2026.

The portal API key and MCP token are separate credentials. The portal key authorises the upstream Stock API; the MCP token authenticates the connection to the adapter.

For the currently documented adapter, an administrator maps the MCP token to your portal API key in the adapter's credential configuration. Arrange this through your organisation's approved secure process. Do not paste either credential into ChatGPT. Generating the portal key alone does not complete MCP setup.

After provisioning, confirm that the MCP connection returns stock from the devices you selected. The next section covers adding that connection to ChatGPT; its authentication flow still needs verification.

Connect to ChatGPT

If your administrator has already provided an installed PartLogic connection, select it in a new conversation and continue to Try your first stock lookup.

For a custom connection, the current ChatGPT developer-mode flow is:

  1. Open Settings → Security and login and enable Developer mode, if available.
  2. Open ChatGPT Plugins and select the plus button.
  3. Name the connection PartLogic and describe it as “Read authorised PartLogic stock records”.
  4. Enter the HTTPS MCP endpoint supplied by your administrator, including its /mcp path.
  5. Complete the administrator-provided authentication setup and create the connection.
  6. Review the discovered tools. The current PartLogic integration should expose list_stock.
  7. Start a new conversation and add PartLogic from the tools menu.

These steps follow OpenAI's connection guide. Interface labels and availability may change.

Authentication setup: the current PartLogic adapter uses bearer-token authentication. A supported ChatGPT authentication flow has not yet been verified for this adapter. If your administrator has not provided a working ChatGPT connection method, contact them before proceeding. Do not select an unauthenticated connection to bypass this requirement.

Try your first stock lookup

With PartLogic selected, ask:

Use PartLogic to retrieve three stock rows. Show the original field names and any source or device information returned. Tell me if retrieval fails.

A successful response should be based on a fresh list_stock call. Check the records against the expected devices in your PartLogic portal before relying on the connection for operational work.

An authentication error means retrieval failed. It does not mean your inventory is empty.

Search for a part

Use a short identifier when you have one. Replace the example reference below with your own:

Search PartLogic stock for ABC-123. Compare the returned identifier fields with ABC-123 and show all possible matches. Keep variants and pack sizes separate.

You can also use a short description:

Search PartLogic stock for washer. Show the matching records and the identifier fields returned.

Search is based on words in the stored row. Every word in the query must match somewhere in that row; it does not understand synonyms or resolve a description to an exact product. A match may come from a field other than the product name.

If a search returns no rows, try fewer words or a shorter reference. A successful search with no matches is different from a failed request.

Check identifiers and variants

A search result is a candidate match. Ask ChatGPT to compare the returned SKU, GTIN or other identifier fields explicitly before treating it as the same item.

Check which returned identifiers exactly match my reference. Preserve leading zeros, show ambiguous matches and do not choose a variant for me.

Keep these rules in mind:

  • Preserve identifiers as text, including leading zeros.
  • An Id field is not automatically a product ID.
  • Missing GTINs or quantities remain unknown; missing stock is not zero stock.
  • Separate different packs, variants and devices unless the returned fields establish that they can be combined.
  • Your organisation's stock records do not establish supplier availability.

Read the results

Stock rows may describe holdings on a device or at a location. Multiple rows can refer to the same item, so a row count is not necessarily a count of distinct products.

Ask for a clear table:

Put these stock rows into a table using the original field names. Include quantities and source or device context where returned. Mark missing values as unknown and tell me when the records were retrieved.

The time ChatGPT retrieves a record is not necessarily the time the stock was last updated. Only report an update time if the source provides one.

Retrieve more results

A first page may be only part of the result set. For a complete listing of accessible stock rows, ask:

Retrieve all accessible PartLogic stock rows. Follow the returned next_offset until there are no more pages. Tell me if any page fails and label incomplete results as partial.

Pages can shift while the underlying stock changes, so this listing is not guaranteed to be a fixed snapshot. Even a complete stock-row listing may omit products with zero stock or no stock row. Use the product master to establish a complete catalogue.

Troubleshooting

What you seeWhat to do
PartLogic or list_stock is missingCheck that the correct connection is enabled. Ask your administrator to check endpoint discovery and the available tools.
HTTP 401 or an unauthorised responseAsk your administrator to check MCP token provisioning, the mapped portal API key and its validity. Treat the lookup as failed.
A successful search returns no rowsReduce the number of search words or try a shorter identifier. Every query word must match.
Expected devices or records are missingCompare the connection's accessible devices with the intended portal access.
Timeout, upstream error or invalid JSONRecord the error and contact your administrator. Do not interpret it as an empty catalogue.
ChatGPT offers to place an order or change stockThe current MCP has no tools for these actions. Use your established workflow.

When reporting an issue, include the tool name, error text, approximate time and a non-sensitive description of the lookup. Exclude tokens and API keys.

Tool reference

ChatGPT normally chooses the tool arguments for you. The current stock lookup contract is:

ArgumentPurpose
queryOptional lexical filter. An empty query lists stock rows. All query words must match somewhere in a row.
offsetStarting offset; defaults to 0. Use the returned next_offset for subsequent pages.
limitNumber of rows requested, from 1 to 100; defaults to 50.

For example, a small initial request is:

{"query":"","offset":0,"limit":3}
